Album Review

Moving away from the lo-fi sound of the preceding Married, 3 Kids, Sportguitar's third album is their most impressive outing yet; there's a snap and a crackle present on Happy Already that the band's earlier releases lacked, and although Oliver Obert's artless vocals and slack, meandering songs still owe a heavy debt to bands like Pavement and Guided by Voices, tracks like "Romeo Goes," "Mistake" and the title cut are among his most distinctive to date. Equally intriguing is the guitar work of Roland Saum, which is consistently inventive without ever being flashy, pushing the songs in unexpected but wholly welcome directions.

Worth your bucks

At first blush a nice bit of pop guit rock but continues to develop over listening sessions. The lyrics are anything but pop. They are stories of consequence; at least they are to this listener.

The Lucerne, Switzerland-based lo-fi outfit Sportsguitar was formed in 1993 by frontman Oliver Obert and multi-instrumentalist Roland Saum, who previously teamed in the band Hypocrisy in Spring. After recording a demo, the duo approached a number of international labels, all of whom passed on releasing their music; as a result, Sportsguitar's 1994 debut LP Fade/Cliché appeared on the band's own label, the aptly-named Our Own Records.
