Ho ho ho and this means YOU

Christmas in L.A. has a long tradition of evoking...well, complicated feelings, and this song gets right in line. The music is sunny pop, fueled by toms and Farfisa, just perfect for a dance party at the beach. The lyrics tell a different story, though, starting with a pointed pun suggesting "let's take the 'x' out of Xmas, please." By the bridge it's clear our narrator is justifiably miserable: "Nobody here to deck the damn halls / And you won't return my calls." But the song successfully treads a very narrow path: it's not subtle, yet it's not bathetic, due to sharply observed details and the timing of lines like "Baby it's all right / No it's not all right / Things just ain't right." The singer is keenly aware of his predicament, and that self-knowledge gives the song just the right ironic edge. It's like a dash of bitters in the punchbowl. Musically it's a bouncy retro-pop confection of acoustic guitar, surf drums, swoony harmonies, and the aforementioned organ. Andy Dick's lead vocal is assured and musical and never breaks character; whatever else, the song's not the least bit tongue-in-cheek and Dick's voice is up to the challenge. Christmas songs, especially "celebrity" christmas songs, are usually doomed to the novelty category. That would be a shame in this case, as the tune not only can stand on its own, it deserves to be on the radio long past the season's demise.

Brashly funny and often utilizing a manic personality to get his humor across, Dick was more often infamous for his legendary heavy partying and drug use before an incident with the law helped him change his habits. Raised in a military family, he knew early on that he was an attention hound and looked to comedy to relieve this feeling. He moved...
