Album Review

BMG Special Products' Happy Christmas Day is an entertaining compilation of highlights from various holiday albums Charley Pride recorded for RCA Records over the years. There are no surprises here and the country-pop production can get a little slick at times, but Pride's warm performances are so engaging that Happy Christmas turns into a charming holiday collection, ideal for listeners on a budget.

A reissue of the classic "Christmas In My Hometown" album

Although a few songs are shuffled in other places, this is a reissue of the 1970 Countrypolitan classic "Christmas In My Hometown" which features Charley singing a bunch of Christmas standards, and some lesser known songs while the title track is the centerpiece of the album and one of his best recordings ever. Travis Tritt also covered it on his Christmas album from 1992, but this is the definitive version of the song. Enjoy Charley at his commercial peak during the holidays with this essential classic.

One of the Best

I had been looking for and hoping to find the original Christmas in My Home Town album as CD. I was delighted to find this on i-Tunes! I grew up on this album and it was always played every year for my brother Scott & my sister Lisa and I. To finally hear it in all it's clarity of CD quality just makes it that much better for me this year!

Happy Christmas Day

This is my favorite Christmas album from my childhood. I remember opening presents Christmas morning with this playing in the background. I still listen to this as my children open their presents. The songs have a great message and Charlie Pride does a great job with his interpretation of them.

With 36 number one hits under his belt, Charley Pride, who is black, has helped prove how little race matters to the majority of country music fans. It's taken a long time to understand that, though. His first single, "Snakes Crawl at Night," was released without publicity photos, as some in the industry feared listeners would automatically reject a black country singer. Since then, Pride's 12 gold albums in the United States, combined with 30 gold and four platinum internationally, place him in...
