Album Review

With The Innocent Age, Dan Fogelberg created the most ambitious, successful, and creative recording of his career and one that in retrospect was actually quite underrated. A sprawling, conceptual song cycle, the double album traces the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Beautifully orchestrated, imaginatively conceived, and obviously well thought out, it works as an artistic statement and also includes some of Fogelberg's most universally appealing and commercially successful music. "Leader of the Band" (about his father) and "Same Old Lang Syne" (about an old girlfriend) have a timeless quality and were big hits. As bold as the album was, Fogelberg acknowledged the importance of his influences and those who inspired him to attempt to reach such lofty musical heights by thanking a long list of music notables in the liner notes. A truly outstanding effort and a major work, The Innocent Age is a recording of a caliber that few artists could achieve; and the fact that it was so commercially successful is a testament to the enormous gifts and appeal of this multi-talented artist.

I love this album

I used to have this album when it first came out in 1981. I was a huge Dan Fogelberg Fan! I especially loved this album! My husband and I due to religious convictions at the time of our Daughters birth in '87, decided to give up all of our albums, and we decided we would only listen to religious contemporary music and fill our house with such. Now our kids are grown and have their own style that they like and listen too, I wanted my favorite album back. So I downloaded it onto my computer and burned a disk for my listening enjoyment! It brings me back to such a wonderful time in my life. For me it's like renewing an old friendship from long ago, hense the meaning of Old Lang Syne ("Old Long Ago"). Gosh I missed you Dan! It's good to have you back!!

Cradle to the Grave

Innocent Age is one of the best albums I own by far. I'm glad it is in here on ITunes. Being the a sailor the some of the songs on this album remind me of the ocean. "Leader of the Band" reminds me very much of my father. They need to play "Run for the Roses" at every horse race. The album is beautifully orchestrated and is well worth the cost!

Farewell Dan...

A good singer with good songs, Dan never got quite as big as we thought he would, but he was a great one, and now he has left us. This is one of his best records.

If James Taylor epitomized the definition and the original, late-'60s incarnation of the term singer/songwriter, Dan Fogelberg exemplified the late-'70s equivalent of that term at its most highly developed and successful, with a string of platinum-selling albums and singles into the early '80s and a long career afterward, interrupted only by a health crisis that led to his untimely death in 2007. He came out of a musical family, born Daniel Grayling Fogelberg on August 13, 1951, in Peoria, IL, where...
