29 Songs, 1 Hour 45 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

It took less than three years for frontman Adam Levine to put his indie band Kara’s Flowers to bed and record Maroon 5’s 2002 debut album, Songs About Jane. The opening “Harder to Breathe” grooved on a funky rock foundation, with Levine hitting soulful high tenor notes and sounding like he'd attended a good number of Jamiroquai concerts before putting this band together. The following “This Love” is just as catchy, even with dialed-down guitars and an octane boost to the band’s funk engine. With Levine’s falsettos, it plays like a loving tribute to Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” (albeit with woeful lyrics that contrast the sunny melodies by musing on the smoldering embers of a burned-out relationship). “She Will Be Loved” simmers down for a beachy serenade before the strolling “Sunday Morning” braids Levine’s love for Jay Kay and Stevie Wonder with some Philly-flavored blue-eyed soul. “Must Get Out” dips Down Under for a detour that sounds rooted in early Men at Work songs. The 10th-anniversary edition offers 17 extra tracks.
