iTunes Review

File this under Perfect Skateboarding Music. Anchored by James Hetfield’s unctuous roar, songs like “Hardwired,” “Moth Into Flame,” and “Atlas, Rise” are no-frills, hard-charging thrash that knocks over everything in its path. The furious pace comes to a simmer on the nuanced “Dream No More” and “Here Comes Revenge,” both worthy of stadium anthem status. But the prevailing mood is downcast. Hardwired… To Self-Destruct is hard music for hard times, an amplified reaction to—and reflection of—an inhumane society.

Customer Reviews

thrash is back!!!

Heard the new single and was really happy that Metallica's thrash sound was back. Definitely excited for this album, I feel like this will be the best since And Justice for All.

Stock Metallica

Based on just the one released song so far, the fans are letting Metallica getting away easy this time. It's heavy, fast, and sounds like Metallica. It's got expicit lyrics. It has nothing about it that makes it better or even as good as anything on the last album (which was amazing). This sounds like Death Magnetic, but there's nothing innovative or worth paying for here. I hope the rest of the album has more to offer. In the movie, Some Kind of Monster, they're often heard rejecting recorded material by labeling a riff or a recording as "stock." Well this is as stock and bland as anything. They can do better.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Metallica were easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s and '90s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rock star games of metal musicians during the mid-'80s pop-metal renaissance. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning...
