Being In Love

Those with European ancestry don't know these songs if they're basing their knowledge on what Top40 radio played. These songs were staples of black radio, and I've heard almost all of these growing up in Washington, DC, listening to WOOK and WOL radio. Major Lance was ugly as sin, but had a great voice and could dance, just like his labelmate Jackie Wilson - both were boxers. The true crossover artists of this label were Eugene Record and the Chi-Lites. I wish they could have included the flip side of the 45 "Oh, Girl", which is a great song called "Being In Love". I own this record and wore it out on my portable turntable as a kid. Even sat on it and put a crack in it but it still plays. Tyrone Davis died recently, had a great voice and good looks and I'm glad to see so much of him in this collection. Great to hear from Aretha Franklin's sister Erma, who has all the pipes you'd expect from that family. Barbara Acklin was like the Chicago Martha Reeves - great voice. She was also the wife of the lead singer of the Chi-Lites, Eugene Record. You will notice that her song "Am I the Same Girl" is the same song as Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut", and it's amusing to hear them both together on the same collection. (This song was remade most successfully by the duo Swing Out Sister back in 1992. Yes, it's been that long ago.) All in all this is a fantastic collection from a fantastic label - I remember that rainbow arrow spinning many a time on my turntable and it's great to revisit some of the great music from a long forgotten time. You just don't hear music like this anymore.

Brunswick Top 40 R & B Singles

Interesting collection of R & B singles. Many of these are rare and I hadn't heard of them. My exposure to R & B was what I got on Top 40 radio. I do beleive if I'm not mistaken that "Am I The Same Girl" song by Barbara Acklin is the vocal rendition of a tune I use to hear in the 70's titled Soulful Strut by The Young-Holt Unlimited.

Bobby Bee

Yeah 4 stars there's some classics like "I'm Gonna Miss You"
