Album Review

Taking the title of their first album from the once-scandalous Manet painting that Bow Wow Wow parodied on a 1982 EP cover, Montreal's Les Breastfeeders debut with the proudly retro Dejeuner sur l'Herbe. With an unerring eye both for ear-pleasing hooks and which old records to steal them from, Les Breastfeeders cheerfully plunder everyone from France Gall and Johnny Hallyday to the Hollies and the Count Five over the course of this knowingly derivative album. It's Les Breastfeeders knack for transforming the scavenged bits into sprightly pop songs as immediately charming as the breathless "Mini Jupe et Watusi," with its chirpy falsetto backing vocals, and the tougher "Angle Mort" that keeps them from becoming merely garage rock Frankensteins. As a result, Dejeuner sur l'Herbe is a hugely entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

Quebec Entertainers

I saw these guys live and they are a great show to see. Their album is as entertaining as their shows are, even without the tambourine player jumping about. Great stuff Je les ai vu en concert ils sont incroyables sur scene. dejeuner sur l'herbe est aussi fou que leurs concerts, meme sans le mec fou furieux qui saute de partout. Vraiment pas mal.

Can't stop listening to it...

Saw these guys play at SXSW in 2007 and was totally blown away. If you get a chance, definately see them live. The other reviewer wasn't kidding about the tambourine playing- it is a sight to behold. Anyway, since then neither album has left my heavy rotation list. Angle Mort makes me want to take up smoking and scoff at everyone in the room-even when I'm by myself. Wish there was a 6-star option.

Genre: French Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The New York contingent of the grand Francophone pop revitalization -- Les Sans Culottes, their offshoot Nous Non Plus, and, of course, scene godmother April March -- favor an overtly ironic, heavily kitschy updating of the great French pop music of the 1960s, as performed by Françoise Hardy, France Gall, and the like. Though Les Breastfeeders are occasionally lumped into that scene thanks to their monolingual Francophone lyrics and heavy '60s influences, they're considerably less cutesy. Perhaps...
