Editors’ Notes

Here Jimmy Eat World morphed into the bright and shining radio rock powerhouse that earlier albums had hinted they could become. Their entire career had been building toward the breakout success of “The Middle,” arguably the platonic ideal of a modern rock song. “Sweetness,” “A Praise Chorus,” and “Bleed American” define their brand of surging and raging but ultimately very sweet rock music.

Truly Fantastic

Jimmy Eat World’s self tilted album (also known as “Bleed American”) is a hands down masterpiece. It truly covers the entire range that JEW has come to embody: hard rocking songs, emotional and dreamy songs, and the more middle tempo motivational songs that JEW is famous for. Best Songs: 1.Bleed American – (10/10) – This is the perfect hard-rocking song complete with all the screams, wails, shredding guitars and pounding drums. 2.Hear You Me – (10/10) – This song is a masterpiece. It’s a slower song with the richest lyrics and touching melodies 3.My Sundown – (10/10) – An often overlooked song. It is the quintessential slow JEW song, but it is totally awesome. The parts at the end where the female vocalist overlaps with the main vocalist are awesome 4.A Praise Chorus – (9.5/10) – Also an awesome up-tempo song. It is one of those great motivational songs with solid lyrics. It gets me pumped up. 5.The Middle – (9/10) – Duh. This song rocks. Yes, it is kind of poppy, but that’s OK. It works brilliantly 6.Sweetness – (9/10) – Also a fast one. You gotta love the “whoa-oh-ohs” Worst Songs: 1.Get it Faster – (7/10) – Honestly, there isn’t a bad song on this CD, but if I had to pick the worst, this would be it. It’s not bad, just mediocre with a somewhat boring chorus Honorable Mention: 1.Cautioners – Not the best song on the CD, but definitely a great song that is frequently overlooked

Once a trailblazing name in the mid-'90s emocore scene, Jimmy Eat World eventually found a larger audience by embracing a blend of alternative rock and power pop that targeted the heart as well as the head. The band's influence widened considerably with 1999's Clarity -- an album that has since emerged as a landmark of the emo genre -- it was the band's follow-up (specifically the infectious single "The Middle") that crowned them as major figures in commercial rock. The emo label proved difficult...
