iTunes Review

After grinding on the mixtape circuit for many years Houston MC Paul Wall finally went nationwide in 2005, lighting up the charts with a run of hit singles and dropping his excellent major-label debut The People's Champ. In the years since, the country's once-unquenchable thirst for everything Houston rap-related has waned somewhat, but he's persevered and thrived, releasing two decent follow-ups, Get Money, Stay True and Fast Life. On this, his fourth go-around, he pretty much sticks to the script, with catchy beats galore, chopped-and-screwed hooks, party-time rhymes, and plenty of features from the usual H-Town suspects, including Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, and Lil Keke, as well as more surprising collaborators like Bay legend Andre Nickatina and bloggers' favorites Kid Sister and Jay Electronica. Travis Barker lends his hand at production, and their group Expensive Taste is also highlighted on "Not My Friend." Key tracks include "Smoke Everyday" with Devin the Dude and Z-Ro, plus "Im'ma Get It" with Bun B.

Back In the Right Direction!

After a bland last album, the Peoples Champ is back! Some syrupy slow jams will delight his older fans of the Houston music scene. Im On Patron, Showin Skillz, Smoke Everyday, and Round Here (Ft. former partner Chamillionaire) all will satiate the appetite for some laid back, chemically induced chill out sessions. Largely produced by Beanz N Kornbread, the Texas music scene is alive and well withe Paul's offerings. These tunes definitely reflect the Paul of old, rhyming about his flossy style, fleet of candy painted cars, and the Houston hip hop scene in general. The other half of the album is where Paul Wall starts to flex the skills he should have been experimenting with after his platinum selling "The Peoples Champ". Wall takes on some topical issues on "Live It", and experiments with faster tempos and more of a live music production feeling on tracks like "Im'ma Get It" and "Take Notes". Former Expensive Taste partner Travis Barker (also of blink-182 fame) handled the production on these tracks and they are a breath of fresh air for Paul. This album is definitely the coolest one he has put out since "Peoples Champ", and a strong album top to bottom with lots of variety for any rap fan.

MC and DJ Paul Wall (born Paul Slayton) grew up as a hardcore disciple of fellow Houstonian DJ Screw and became so familiar with the pioneering DJ's woozy, slowed-down style of remixing that he had to adjust to hearing hip-hop at any other tempo. Prior to making a nationwide breakout in 2005 with a guest spot on Mike Jones' "Still Tippin'" and his Swishahouse/Atlantic Records debut, The Peoples Champ, Wall was involved with promotional street teams, DJed parties, put together underground mixtapes,...
