iTunes Review

Since Emmylou Harris has never been talked into recording an album that didn’t reflect her own high standards for songwriting and has never worked with musicians who didn’t at least understand what they were supposed to do, Harris has never recorded an album that rings false. As an artist who has never cared so much for hit singles as for working on a project that meant something to her, Harris comes up with some unusual and sublime moments. This “Best Of” touches on some of her more traditional fare, the material she learned alongside country-rock legend Gram Parsons. No one can inject more pathos into “Love Hurts” (her duet with Parsons), the Louvin Brothers’ “If I Could Only Win Your Love,” Buck Owens’ “Together Again” or Townes Van Zandt’s tale of “Pancho & Lefty.” Her own tribute to Parsons on “Boulder to Birmingham” sounds lonelier as the years pass. Even the album’s new, unproven cut, “The Connection” sounds like it belongs on a “Greatest Hits” collection.

The Purest Voice

Pour a bourbon and water, turn out the lights, lean back late at night and listen to Michelangelo. It sounds like a perfect voice synthesizer, yet with heartbreaking emotion. What beautiful stuff.

Emmylou's finest...and that's saying alot!

This collection of songs and performances is just about heaven. The power of her voice, the lonely call to remember, the wistful hopes of a friend or lover...they're all here. There's simply no one else like her. There are others as distinct and gifted in their own right: Joni Mitchell, Dolly, Willie Nelson, but Emmylou stands alone. Enjoy this incredible experience of sound, song and emotion.

Great Emmylou

If you only buy one Emmylou album, this is it. My favorites are Pancho and Lefty, Making Believe, One of These Days and If I Could Only Win Your Love. Oops, also Two More Bottles of Wine and Together Again are also great. Trust me, I have been a fan since the 70's, own all her albums, and this is really the best.

Though other performers sold more records and earned greater fame, few had as profound an impact on contemporary music as Emmylou Harris. Blessed with a crystalline voice, a remarkable gift for phrasing, and a restless creative spirit, she traveled a singular artistic path, proudly carrying the torch of "cosmic American music" passed down by her mentor, Gram Parsons. With the exception of only Neil Young -- not surprisingly an occasional collaborator -- no other mainstream star established a similarly...
