EDITORS’ NOTES

Kanye turns unbearable pain into haunted, stark electro-pop on this daring album, embracing electronic chill and ‘80s New Wave to express his suffering and isolation. His Auto-Tuned voice aches over sharp, icy piano and harsh Roland TR-808 drumbeats on “Love Lockdown” and turns aggressively wrathful as a buzzsaw synth propels “See You in My Nightmares.” Ye moves into stirring, art-pop melodrama on “RoboCop,” but his gut-wrenching vulnerability is clearest on the minimalist electro-pop of “Coldest Winter”—a frostbitten, Tears for Fears-sampling goodbye to his late mother.

Masterpiece.

Many critics of the album disliked the whole concept of Kanye using auto-tune on all of 808s & Heartbreak, and that the sound of the album was very “poppy”. If some listeners had just taken the time to do some background research on what this album is about and why it’s not another rap album by Kanye, then they would understand why it’s so different. I believe it is his most personal album to date, but everyone is entitled to an opinion

Kanye is a rap genius

Not only was 808s a game changer, it was also something new and daring in the rap era he introduced it in. Kanye isn't afraid to take risks and that's what makes him an elite rapper and producer.

Art

This was album was a prime example of Kanye West telling you you could not put a label on him. This was just simply great music. It is sonically extremely ahead of its time, as well as musically, each arrangement has that simplistic notoriety that at everyone is shooting for today. This album is extremely underrated and is in a class of its own. In three words I would describe it as, processed, rhythmic, and raw.
