Album Review

A re-pressing of 2002's excellent Anthologia: 20th Anniversary Geffen Years Collection, this isn't just a loosely assembled collection of Asia's finest moments — it's everything but the kitchen sink and bandmember arguments caught on tape. For diehards who missed its initial pressing, this second time around is redemption. This, quite simply, delivers everything fans could ever want (and in some cases need) from the supergroup that was at the top of the arena rock game during the '80s. However, those who aren't die-hard loyalists would be better served by checking out 2003's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Asia as a viable substitute and a filler-free, less intimidating entry point into the group's catalog.

The Geffen Years

This compliation was originally released as "Anthologia" in 2002 for the 20th Anniversary. This contains all of the first album, "Alpha", "Astra", "Then & Now", and some B-sides. This highlights the John Wetton era studio material from MTV-ready hits to collaborating with David Cassidy and Toto's Steve Lukather (a veteran session master). This is part of a continuing Gold series that started with PolyGram ("ABBA Gold"). Now the band have come full circle as the original lineup (who I caught in Albany, NY in June) have been back together for over a year.

This is the collection to get of the original group. It has everything you'd need in carrying all the tracks from the first (and original) group. A must for your 80s rock collection.

Synth Rock Composed with True Talent

A blend of earnest rock with synth, composed with the skill of the master composers of old. Although the "big" hits are limited, the unique music is crafted with exceptional talent.

When they appeared in the early '80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the '70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent instrumentals on their records. However, they also could be surprisingly poppy, and that is what brought them to the top of...
