iTunes Review

Originally issued in the U.S. market in 1987 as a compilation of singles, b-sides, BBC sessions, and random album tracks, Louder Than Bombs proved to be the band's defining release for many stateside Smiths fans. The group's studio albums stretched out their approach, while the singles were guitarist Johnny Marr's métier. The band has since issued far too many collections of singles and greatest hits. As great as those are, Louder Than Bombs has an artistic sweep that's irresistible. Morrissey's lyrical acumen is never better targeted than during "Shoplifters of the World Unite," "Half a Person," "Panic," "William, It Was Really Nothing," "Ask," and the powerfully compact "These Things Take Time." The band's brilliance can't be overstated, and the pacing throughout is superb. The Smiths' ability to rock, reflect, and ache is second to none. This album is an embarrassment of riches, really, and along with Hatful of Hollow and the band's debut album ranks as a perfect look at the best rock 'n' roll band of the '80s.

Don't bother with the iTunes album reviewer

Not sure what the iTunes album review at top is referring to when it says that Louder Than Bombs features "several cuts from The Smiths". The only song the debut album has in common with this one is "Hand In Glove", and they aren't even the same mix (the track here has a fade in/out at the beginning and end, for example). So no need to worry that you're buying the same thing twice. Also not sure why the reviewer would make the "overlong and unfocused" remark either. It's a singles collection, what do you expect? Of course it's a bit random, but it also compiles the best non-album singles by the Smiths. You'd really have to search pretty hard to find complaints with this album or their other studio albums, and I certainly don't have any. One of the most essential, witty and melodic alt-pop bands you'll ever find. If you don't already have this (and I don't know why you wouldn't), get it now and play it often.

Love this album!

I have been a fan of the smiths for a white now and this is my second favorite album after "meat is murder". My personal favorite song is Asleep, and I just can get enough of this album. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes kind of edgy music with a lot of meaning behind it

Formed: 1982 in Manchester, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s

The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by...
