iTunes Review

Heigh Ho is only his second release, but it’s the work of a seasoned artist. At just 28, Blake Mills is already an in-demand session guitarist. He’s worked with Norah Jones, Band of Horses, Lucinda Williams, and other big names. On Heigh Ho, he’s joined by guests Benmont Tench, Don Was, Fiona Apple, and Jim Keltner. That’s a lot of name-dropping. But Mills more than lives up to it. The guitar playing is phenomenal. It’s textured, subtle, and brilliant without being showy. But he’s also a gifted songwriter and arranger, and his singing is emotional and distinct. Mills is one of those rare artists who has it all. And most importantly, he knows what to do with it.

A PLETHORA OF GOOD MUSICIANS & BAD DECISIONS

I admit there are songs I'd like to hear here. But they sound sabotaged - i.e. lead vocals buried in dissonant ensembles so that lyrics are inaudible; etc. I think if someone more objective produced or co-produced, the songs might've been more coherent and understandable. I downloaded 3 tracks because you only get 90 seconds to make your decision - I wish someone else had produced and mixed this album. He has obscured his true talents and it seems a shame.

Thanks Blake

A virtuoso player with restraint and taste. I’m such a fan of this guy’s whole deal. Gifted songwriter. It’s so nice to get excited about an artist again. Buy his other record too. It’s brilliant.

Blake is the best thing to come out of the music industry in YEARS

Blake is supremely refreshing songwriter and guitarist. He's a genuine guitar virtuoso, but one of the very few that puts taste above displaying his skill; and he’s all the more masterful as a result. His vocals are soulful and blend nicely with his gritty and clever songs. I highly recommend this album, and his previous one Break Mirrors (how they pronounce his name in Japan). And if you get a chance to see him live, don’t miss it! Not convinced? YouTube his Bob Dylan cover of "Heart of Mine” on Conan O’Brien. Or find the different versions of his “Just Wanna See You So Bad” Lucinda Williams cover. Or any of his other videos (with Matt Sweeney, with Fretboard Journal, etc).
