Album Review

Children’s music machine Dan Zanes has been nearly unstoppable since converting to the genre in the early 2000s. The former Del Fuego has made it a habit of crafting amiable, intelligent songs for kids of all ages that cover the whole spectrum of popular music worldwide. 2009’s 76 Trombones set its’ sights on Broadway, collecting 17 stage classics culled from Sir Paul McCartney's MPL catalog. Taking a cue from earlier releases, Zanes and his talented crew of New York-based friends and family treat the whole affair (and the source material) with the kind of ramshackle, back-porch glee that can only come from cool musicians with cool kids (look for appearances from musical theater luminaries like Carol Channing, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Matthew Broderick de’Adre Aziza, and Derick K. Grant. While Zanes and crew manage to keep all of the melodies and theatrical frivolity intact, the collection is completely bereft of any ornamental pretense, rendering Broadway standards like “Hello Dolly” and “Gary, Indiana/The Wells Fargo Wagon” into new folk standards, resulting in a road trip compilation that both kids and their parents can agree on.

It

Dane Zane has done it again, another classic for kids and parents......

Dan Zanes is hapiness robot

I have deduced that Dan is a robot because he apparently doesn't require sleep. So much in the way of great family music this year. Take a break Dan! Or not, it is pretty much wonderful being constantly welcomed to an all new music and dance party of yours! I grew up cherishing a Sunday radio show titled "Sunday Morning Show Tunes", thanks for the trip down memory lane, and thanks for bringing your friends. Much love from your friends at Mrs. Tiggy Winkle's Toys! THANKS AGAIN!

The Impossible Dream!

I have been waiting years for Dan Zanes and Friends to finally bridge the gap between high octane folk music and show tunes. Their first cd, Rocket Ship Beach, included an amazingly heartfelt version of Frank Loesser's "Bushel and a Peck" and now ten years later the dream (my dream anyway) of an all Broadway disc comes true. My kids are going crazy dancing and singing along and so are my parents. Does it go without saying that my wife and I are too? This is true all-ages music which has, in my opinion, no category at all other than soulful good-time sounds, or perhaps, as I heard Dan Zanes say in a recent interview "Broadway for the new economy, sounding like rusty bent nails and pieces of driftwood." Recommended for one and all!

Biography

Born: 1961 in Exeter, NH

Genre: Children's Music

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After years of rocking in the 1980s with the Del Fuegos, singer/songwriter Dan Zanes created his own band, the Dan Zanes Trio, in 1994. The group got started when Zanes was hanging out with producer Mitchell Froom in Lower Manhattan; after adding drummer Jerry Marotta, they began playing their sparse blues and folk-rock to small crowds in clubs like the CBGB Gallery. Produced by Froom, the trio's debut LP, Cool Down Time, a raw rock effort influenced by '60s-era R&B, appeared in 1995. In 2001...
