Harpist Carol Kleyn—who long ago toured with Gregg Allman, drew comparisons to Judy Collins, and made her name on the Renaissance Faire circuit—recorded three albums: 1976’s Love Has Made Me Stronger, 1980’s Takin’ the Time, and 1983’s Return of the Silkie. The eclectic and unusual independent record label Drag City has now seen fit to re-release them. The idiosyncratic folk melodies that guide Kleyn's songs make sense for anyone who’s explored the works of ‘60s and ‘70s female folk artists like Judee Sill, Vashti Bunyan, and Linda Perhacs or more recent artists such as Joanna Newsom and Meg Baird. Referred to in her music bio as “1983’s third chapter in the as-yet-unfinished saga of the nomadic West Coast harpist Carol Kleyn,” Return of the Silkie may one day have a follow-up album. But in 2013, it stands as the last music released by this back-to-nature utopian with an angelic voice.
