EDITORS’ NOTES

If Aaron Bruno’s goal was to create a rock album similar to the ones he idolized growing up—think Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, Dire Straits—he succeeded. The AWOLNATION prodigy swirls numerous styles into the mix and retrofits them for today. “Miracle Man” and “Jealous Buffoon” have an urgency that recalls Eurythmics and The Power Station. Snappy bars and drum loops frame “Sound Witness System” firmly in the present. Yet despite all the cool bells and whistles (literally), it’s the straight-and-narrow songwriting and vocal performances on “Handyman” and “My Molasses” that make Here Come the Runts stand out.

About AWOLNATION

A solo project of Aaron Bruno, AWOLNATION began as a creative outlet for the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Bruno, who had been a member of Home Town Hero and Under the Influence of Giants, needed a break from the collaborative process and hoped to find a place for some of his songs that didn't fit with his other bands. Bruno built a kind of creative free-for-all for himself, mixing genres in a style reminiscent of Beck, and blending live instrumentation, electronic elements, and slick production into an electro pop hybrid drawing from the whole of pop music. In 2011, AWOLNATION made its full-length debut, releasing Megalithic Symphony on Red Bull Records. The album went platinum in the United States and double platinum in Canada, largely on the strength of the hit single "Sail." The following year saw the release of the EP I've Been Dreaming, which AWOLNATION made available as a free download via its website, and in January 2015, AWOLNATION dropped "Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)," the first single from its sophomore long-player, Run, which was released later that spring. That same year, AWOLNATION landed a hit with a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire," which appeared on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. In late 2017, Bruno released the song "Passion." The track was the first single from his third studio effort, Here Come the Runts, which was released in February 2018. ~ Gregory Heaney
