iTunes Review

Here We Rest is the third solo release by former Drive-By Truckers guitarist and singer Jason Isbell. For the second straight release he’s backed by the solid 400 Unit band on fiddle, organ, drums, harmonica, bass, and harmony vocals, and the album showcases Isbell’s literate and vivid storytelling as well as the band’s diversity and collective chops. Most of the songs fall within the mid-tempo range where Isbell seems most comfortable. His warm, inviting voice shines on the earthy “Alabama Pines,” “Codeine,” and the crisp country shuffle of “Tour of Duty,” while “Daisy Mae” is a gorgeous melody sung to fingerpicked guitar. On the grittier side, “Go It Alone” and the piano-fueled “Never Could Believe” possess a Southern rock bite, and their version of “Heart On a String” is a powerful slice of country soul. Isbell excels at capturing a mood or a moment with a terse lyric, and there’s the ring of truth to these song’s characters that are struggling to deal with hard times and unexpected change. Here We Rest is a memorable release from a gifted songwriter confidently asserting his own voice.

Third times a charm.

Jason Isbell's third album is much more acoustic driven and has a ton of soul. The first half of 'Here We Rest' is killer - it has really stood out after a couple listens. This album is easily worth the price of admission.

Home Run

Isbell and the 400 Unit hit their follow up album out of the park. Difficult territory for bands following up on great debut albums. Isbell again shows off his incredible story telling. His songs as with DBT and his solo effort are somehow sad but also make you want to be a part of the characters trials "Alabama Pines", "Codeine", "Save it for Sunday", "Tour of Duty". Great work guys. Got my vinyl copy with the 2 unreleased tracks "Brand New Stone" and "Everywhere With Helicopter" along with digital copy from the boy's website and could not be happier. Been waiting for this for a long time with high expectations and could not be happier. Looking forward to the tour this summer.

"We'll laugh like little children telling secrets. Probably cry like old women drinking gin. because I've done my tour of duty now I'm home and I ain't leaving here again"
