Album Review

Composers Hans Zimmer and John Powell infuse the score for Dreamworks' 2008 animated comedy-adventure Kung Fu Panda with plenty of semi-traditional Asian motifs and instrumentation, resulting in an enjoyable — if entirely predictable — soundtrack that deals out clichés like candy on Halloween. The opening track introduces the "Hero" theme, a wistful flute-led melody that sounds nearly identical to Howard Shore's "Hobbit" theme from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What follows is largely orchestral, with bursts of tribal percussion and the occasional dance number. The soundtrack closes with star Jack Black and Cee-Lo Green performing "Kung Fu Fighting," a song whose inclusion is apparently mandatory for every film, commercial, or skit ever made involving Asian culture.

The "Kung Fu Fighting" single is the best thing on the album?? Please! While it's quite good, the score by Hans Zimmer and John Powell (2 of my favorites) is far more engaging for me. And while Zimmer is credited first, most of the themes are clearly by Powell. These guys do some of their best work for animated movies, and together they are fantastic (they also did "Road to Eldorado"). Kung Fu Panda is rousing, energetic, and full of melody. A fantastically fun ride.

A great movie with a great soundtrack!!

The whole time I watched this I was smiling and laughing.. The music really fits the artwork and mood of the movie. Hans Zimmer and John Powell really did a fantastic job. If you haven't seem Kung Fu Panda, I HIGHLY recommend it! :)
