About Ruby Hughes

Ruby Hughes is a Welsh soprano, and the daughter of ceramicist Elizabeth Fritsch. At first a cello student, Hughes attended London's Guildhall School of Music, and after graduation, studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, where she switched to voice and earned her diploma in concert and song categories. Winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Susan Chilcott Award and a Samling scholarship, Hughes also received a full scholarship that allowed her to study with Lillian Watson at the Royal College of Music in London, where she graduated in 2009. She became a BBC New Generation Artist and a prize winner at the 2009 London Handel Singing Competition. Hughes has sung with the English National Opera, the Early Opera Company, the Garsington Opera, the Opera Group, Music Theatre Wales, and the Scottish Opera. As a concert artist, she has performed with conductors Harry Christophers, Laurence Cummings, Christian Curnyn, Philippe Herreweghe, Juanjo Mena, Marc Minkowski, Hervé Niquet, Gianandrea Noseda, Thomas Søndergård, John Storgårds, and Takuo Yuasa, among others. Hughes has appeared with such ensembles as Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, Les Arts Florissants, the Britten Sinfonia, Le Concert Spirituel, the King's Consort, the London Mozart Players, the Manchester Camerata, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. In recital, Hughes has sung with pianists Julius Drake and Joseph Middleton.
