iTunes Review

Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek has written an unusual number of epic compositions throughout his career, and 2008’s April, the third Sun Kil Moon, is packed with extended, anguished acoustic and electric blowouts that obsess on memory and personal loss. For nine minutes Kozelek haunts “Lost Verses” as an invisible presence observing his loved ones while an anonymous vocal choir chants eerily behind him. For seven-plus minutes, “The Light” shifts between acoustic and electric guitar textures and a downcast, somber melody that best expresses the song’s emotional insecurities. “Tonight the Sky,” a tribute to a late friend, comes charging forth with a mutation on the riff from Neil Young’s “Ohio,” its passion for life growing stronger throughout its ten-minute build. “Lucky Man” recounts Kozelek’s wayward teenaged years and love for classic rock. “Moorestown” walks the streets of a small town where a romance blossomed. “Tonight in Bilbao” expresses a touring musician’s spiritual isolation. The album’s sonic and emotional depth is unparalleled.

Utter Triumph

It was hard for any album, much less another from the same artist, to top Ghosts of the Great Highway, but the Koz may have done it. This is a masterpiece, to quote multiple sources including my own opinion. It's a little more understated than SKM's debut, and well worth the investment of time it requires. There are a few detours from Ghosts here, mostly with the added harmonies and a few instrumental choices, which all work... well. I'm in awe. Surely the best album of '08 unless one of the best albums of all time is released between now and December. My favorite tracks (for today anyway) are Lost Verses and Like the River.

Thoughtful, slow, beautiful

Sun Kil Moon wasn't a name I recognized up until a couple weeks ago. After hearing a couple songs, I can say that I'm certainly now a fan. This music gets under your skin and becomes better with each listen. It's music for quiet evenings or rainy days when you have the time to really absorb the meaning and appreciate the lyrics. It's slow and soft, but somehow never boring despite the fact that these songs run long. For some listeners, the vocals might take some getting used to. At times I love the unique, flawed, sound, and at other times it grates a little bit. But, the imperfection is all part of the experience, seemingly adding credibility to the album and the artist. This is one of the best folk albums released this year so far. Favorite Tracks: "The Light," "Lucky Man," "Like the River"

Amazing! Great To Have Kozelek Back!!

Words can't begin to describe how great this record is. The mood that the melodic guitar and soothing lyrics of 'April' create, are unfound in today's radio-pop generation. Thank you Mark Kozelek for continuing to write such great inspiring records. I hope we are in for many more to follow in the future!!
