Album Review

Energetic and radio-friendly, Marvelous 3's strong major-label debut, Hey! Album, shows the Atlanta band's roots in a mixture of '70s pop/rock with '90s power pop. Reminiscent of Cheap Trick and the Cars, Marvelous 3 sounds like Ben Folds Five traded their piano for lead guitar. Hey! is a likeable, melodic album, full of self-conscious and self-deprecating lyrics bordering on preciousness. While Butch Walker's I-wish-I-was-punk vocals are not particularly original, the album manages to salvage itself, mostly due to tight arrangements and seamless production. The lyrics and music often contradict each other, as many of the songs deal with being trapped or jilted, while the music sounds carefree and energetic: a near-perfect combination of angst and bliss.

Customer Reviews

One of the best!

There are not many albums that you find more than 4 great songs on the same album. This album has 12 great songs. For real. I first heard of M3 on HBO's show called "Reverb" I like all three songs that were featured from this album. When I bought the CD I couldn't believe how caught up I was on every guitar riff, drum fill and yes the lyrics. This is a timeless very underated rock classic!

Greatest album ever. Seriously.

You know how if you hear a song too many times you'd rather go to an inlaws family reunion than hear it one more time? That will never happen with Hey Album! It's awesome from start to finish. No need to use the skip button; every song is better than the previous.

Good Times

I remember rocking out to this so many times. I was drawn to this album because "Freak of the Week" but when I heard the rest of the songs I was blown away! This really was a great album; the last three songs are a little. . . whatever, but the first nine are amazing!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

An Atlanta-based trio comprising several members of the pop-metal band SouthGang, Marvelous 3 became a critic's darling in 1999 with the smash single "Freak of the Week." The band had formed two years prior, releasing the albums Math and Other Problems and Hey! Album before joining the ranks of Everclear, Foo Fighters, and Buckcherry as another energetic yet rollicking pop band. Marvelous 3 also became MTV mainstays and landed touring spots with groups like Collective Soul and blink-182. Not entirely...
