iTunes Review

Gram Parsons’ overdose on September 19, 1973 at age 26 ensured a certain legendary status for the man who brought country music to the rock n’ roll audience. His work with the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers merged his love of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and George Jones with his equal affection for the Rolling Stones. His erratic personal life was mirrored in his musical output. He recorded just two solo albums — 1973’s G.P. and 1974’sGrievous Angel — for Reprise Records in the early 1970s, not living to see the release of the second. Both albums are stocked with highlights and feature the emergence of another future country heavyweight in Emmylou Harris, whose harmonies perfectly compliment Parsons throughout. A third disc of alternate takes will be of strong interest to Parsons fanatics, but mostly prove the producers of the original sets could discern the quality between the different takes. The real magic is heard in transcendent tracks ranging from the George Jones cover “That’s All It Took” and Parsons ori

Little Reason to Download

The packaging of the official CD release is terrific (the original album sleeves for the "GP" and "Grievous Angel" discs are replicated in exacting detail -- right down to the text on the spine of the original sleeves), and the third disc collects a treasure trove of rough mixes and alternate takes that will absolutely delight die-hard fans. My guess is that with Parsons, you're either all in or you just don't get what the fuss is about. If you're in the former group, like me, you probably ran to the record store on the day this was released and happily plunked down $30+ to add it to your collection. There's little reason to download this -- get the real thing or buy the two-fer CD "GP/Grievous Angel" to hear the original works in all their wonderful, raging glory.

This is the Real Deal

If you don't have these two Parson's LP's---shame on you. If you have them you should get this complete sessions CD anyway---just for the alternate takes and unreleased cuts. From the International Submarine Band to the Byrds to the Flying Burritto Bros. to these solo recordings---Gram Parsons was way ahead of his time. He made country cool to the rock crowd without sacrificing what true country music is all about. Pick this CD up and get the Flying Burrito Bros. too. Then check out the just released documentary on Gram called 'Fallen Angel'. It pulls no punches and you get the whole Parsons saga----warts and all.

"The Grievous Angel Returns!"

The long reach of Gram Parsons can be felt in so many of today's "Alt-Country" bands! "The Complete Reprise Sessions" pulls together the complete "GP" and "Grievous Angel "LP's; plus rare Radio Interviews, out-takes, alternate & instrumental versions never before heard until now! {Gram certainly wanted to "keep it real" when he hired Merle Haggard's top recording man, Hugh Davies; and asked to get none other than Elvis Presley's own band to back him up in the studio, and, oh, yes, he was introduced to a young female harmony singer by the name of Emmylou Harris!} And the resulting two recordings have taken their place in "Country-Rock-Honky-Tonk History!" Chestnuts: She, The New Soft Shoe, I Can't Dance, Cry One More Time & In My Hour Of Darkness. Put your "Cash On The Barrelhead" for this one! Grimmbo.

Gram Parsons is the father of country-rock. With the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, the songwriter pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, and as a solo artist he moved even further into the country realm, blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other. While he was alive, Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to...
