scorching electro punk masterpiece

Wow-- a re-release from a mid 1980's cool electro/punk band The Units, from San Francisco. Their "hit" was High Pressure Days--of which we get three versions--two new--and the original. It's lyrics are spot-on and prophetic of today's daily mad-dash to nowhere. Musically, it's synthesizer heavy--but this song totally rocks out and during the instrumental break comes crazily beautifully unhinged. The vocals are a very compelling combination of melodic/frantic. My fave is the shorter original version with a real live human playing drums. Check it out--a lost gem worthy of our attention!

Old Is New

This cult act from the early 80's sounds remarkably contemporary. Should appeal to fans of DFA and LCD Soundsystem. Now if only they would reissue "The Right Man", another great track.

A Classic

This is a classic from the early-80's that I played on my college radio show many times. From the seminal 415 west coast label and long out of print, it's great to see at least this one track. The entire LP would be nice sometime, but this is the standout track. Pre-dates and anticpates the electro dance music soon to come - I've always felt the Units were underappreciated. If you like this, search for another favorite from the period: Drinking Electricity and their track 'Breakout'. Not on iTunes and absolutley obscurist, but similar pulsing synth energy from Canadien duo.

Part performance art piece, part synth pop/post-punk/new wave innovators, the Units practically ruled the San Francisco scene in the late '70s and early '80s before flirting with unlikely mainstream success in 1983. Often cited as one of the pioneers of synth punk along with mythical Los Angeles-based group the Screamers, the Units built swirling prog rock-esque keyboards and frenetic electronic blips around...
