iTunes Review

Among the most impressive Detroit rappers working today, Guilty Simpson has been making moves for about a decade, wowing listeners with his no-nonsense, street-savvy rhyme style, delivering a perfect mix of punch-you-in-the-face directness and subtle humor. Small Professor is an up-and-coming producer from Philadelphia, best known for projects like Slowbus and Gigantic Vol. 1. On Highway Robbery, they team up for a 10-song EP overflowing with dense beatwork and devastating wordplay. Features include DITC representative AG ("It's Nuthin") and Boldy James ("I'm the City"), but it's Guilty and Small Pro who really run things here, exhibiting a strong chemistry that most emcees and producers can only aspire to. Though short in length, this is a truly impressive release and hopefully just a taste of more to come. Check out "Get That Pay," "On the Run," and "Go."

If you're a fan of Killer Mike/El-P, Brother Ali/Jake One, Jake One/Freeway type of projects, then you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS. This album is worth twice what it's being sold for, no lie.

Detroit's heavyweight emcee Guilty Simpson and Philly's burgeoning beat smith Small Professor are pleased to present their collaborative effort, 'Highway Robbery.' Weighing in at ten tracks, the project places you in a seemingly post apocalyptic Detroit where the mentality is feast or famine. 'Highway Robbery' plays as one long narrative of Guilty's day-to-day survival in Detroit's concrete jungle, all set to the tone of Small Professor's foreboding, percussion heavy production. Featuring guest appearances from Detroit's Boldy James, AG (of D.I.T.C.), Elucid, Castle (Mello Music Group), with both Statik Selektah and DJ Revolution handling the Technic 1200s, 'Highway Robbery' is now available on iTunes through Beat Goliath/Coalmine Records for the bargain bin rate of just $6.99.

Great album. Every track kills it. The beats are a bit different than anything I've heard but they grow on you. Love the interludes. and of course Guilty kills it on the mic. Some of the best tracks I've heard him on.

Born: 1980 in Detroit, MI

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

In contrast to his imposing presence and hard thug posture comparable to rappers like Bumpy Knuckles or Big Shug, Detroit rhyme-slayer Guilty Simpson first achieved exposure on records by eccentric left-field producers like Madlib, Dabrye, Four Tet, and one of his biggest admirers, Detroit's own J Dilla. His lyrics and distinctive flow can also be found on locally released material dating back to the late '90s as a member of local hip-hop brigade Tha Almighty Dreadnaughtz, but those independently...
