Album Review

The Best of Joe Sample is an effective introduction to his popular recordings for Warner Brothers. Since it's designed for a casual fan, the collection contains no surprises — there aren't any unreleased items, only numbers like "Chain Reaction," "Hippies on a Corner," "Summertime," and "Black and White (As Simple as That)," which will be exactly what anyone purchasing this disc will want to hear. There are no revelations for longtime followers, but it's a satisfying sampler, nonetheless.

The Best of Joe Sample

Before smooth Jazz there was Joe Sample and the Crusaders, really not smooth but not hard Jazz either. Still great listenning from Sample and the funky West Coast sounds he conjures up. The stand out cut must be "Hippies On a Corner", very tasty and just the right amount of spice. He must have been in San Fransisco when he wrote this tune and observing the locals hanging out. You will not be disapointed with this CD.

The artists are talented but the songs overall are average and somewhat monotonous...Sorry!

The Crusaders' debt to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers wasn't hard to miss -- except that the L.A.-based unit had no trumpeter, and became known for its unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal...
