iTunes Review

At a time when the music world’s attention was mostly turned toward Seattle, Rocket from the Crypt singlehandedly established San Diego as a rock ’n’ roll hub with their 1992 debut. Circa: Now! borrowed the reckless spirit of The Replacements and supercharged it with the guitar dynamics of Fugazi, and an edgy pop sensibility to rival Nirvana. Within a few years, The Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, and Foo Fighters would all be storming the pop charts, but “Short Lip Fuser,” “Hippy Dippy Do,” and “Ditch Digger” perfected that sound long before any of those bands made it big.

Criminally Overlooked

Lost in the sea of all things Nirvana, RFTC was passed over by the alternative set when this album was released. A total shame. As the All Music Guide states, Ditch Digger and March of Dimes are melodic, powerful anthems. Do yourself a favor and download one of those two songs. I only wish that iTunes had used the remastered version of this album, since the first ed. suffered from some fairly middling production values.

Criminally overlooked is right!

This is a staple in my rotation. Ranks up there with 'Quicksand' and 'Hot Snakes' in terms of outstanding lyrics and presentation but often neglected a mention when it comes to influence and raw musical presence. A must-own in my humble opinion...

Time heals all wounds

Yeah, In retrospect... ... I kind of vurp when Nirvana comes on the radio now. Rocket will last forever in my collection of treasures. What the hell were we thinking?

Bassist Petey X, guitarist N.D., drummer Sean, and backing vocalist Elaina joined the band's initial lineup, and Rocket from the Crypt released Paint as a Fragrance in 1991. While the debut increased the band's profile, a lineup change ensued as Sean and Elaina left the San Diego area....
