iTunes Review

These New Zealanders started in the mid-'70s as a quirky art-rock outfit with echoes of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. By the end of the '70s, they'd evolved into a more pop-oriented new wave band and found far greater success. This collection focuses exclusively on the latter period, capturing the edginess and energy of tunes like "I See Red" "What's the Matter with You," and "Hard Act to Follow," as well as the classic pop melodies and indelible hooks of "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" and the anthology's title track. The band's biggest hit, "I Got You," was penned by Neil Finn; it marked his emergence in a band dominated by his brother Tim and presaged his subsequent success with Crowded House.

Some of the BEST music the 80's had to offer...

I can't say enough about this album - it changed my life. Twenty years ago, The BEST of SPLIT ENZ, was the album that catapulted me into a world of music exploration, way beyond the forced-fed garbage I’d been listening to until that point. Neil & Tim Finn have remained a part of my life since then (and only my family has accomplished that feat). Everything NEIL FINN touches is GOLD. The man is a SUPER GENIUS songwriter, not to mention extremely talented musician (on too many instruments to mention) - no one writes better hooks, catchy lyrics and beautiful music like this man.... NO ONE. If you ever get the opportunity to see him perform live - snap it up - as he is a phenomenal performer as well.

Great review of a band that only received light exposure on MTV in the 80's

For fans of Split Enz and fans of Crowded House, this is a great album to have. It gives you a feel of where Neil Finn began to develop his style and songwriting skill. Message to My Girl could just as easily been a Crowded House song. My favorite memory of Split Enz videos on MTV in the 80's: Watching Tim screw up the lip sync.

iTunes, put up Time & Tide!!

This has a few nice tunes in it. But I just popped in their Time & Tide cassette the other day and re-realized how wonderful this band is, I suggest you find that album somewhere, it is THEIR BEST that i've heard so far (I'm digging for more now after almost 20 years), extremely well done. No-one could possibly regret owning it. I could really identify with it being in the military at a young age, but theres just so many good songs that arent present here that you would be sorely amiss if you didnt at least give it a listen. I had no idea they were also Crowded House.

Formed: 1972 in Auckland, New Zealand

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Best known for their early-'80s new wave pop hits, particularly "I Got You," Split Enz -- after surviving a dizzying array of image and personnel changes and a full decade without any recognition outside of their homeland -- became the first New Zealand band to achieve worldwide success. Although they never reached superstar status outside of Australia and New Zealand, the band developed a strong international cult following that continued to thrive over a decade after their breakup. Split Enz's...
