The most powerful music I have come across.

The Punk Singer... wow

Saw them recently in Detroit at the Marble Bar. Wow Kathleen Hanna and the whole band are just very real people and if you are not familiar with Kathleen and Kathi from the early 90's then check out The Punk Singer movie documentary. Hanging around the University of Western Ontario CHRW alternative radio station at that time I heard lots of music from Washington in including Bikini Kill but I did not have awareness of what Kathleen Hanna and other young women were doing for equal rights and feminism. Now that I have daughters I want to be empowered and respected as any man, and many female research students in my lab, I suggest they should watch the Punk Singer sometime. This latest album is fun and yet there are messages in the songs that are so much more than we typically get to digest from the pop machine.

Originally dubbed a one-off experiment by ex-Bikini Kill lead singer Kathleen Hanna, Julie Ruin released their self-titled record on the Kill Rock Stars label in September 1998, following the breakup of Bikini Kill in February of that year. Described as Hanna's alter ego, Julie Ruin picked up where Bikini Kill left off, singing of feminism, violence, objectification, juxtaposition, and the Valley Girl Intelligentsia.
