Back when jazz was enjoying some soulful radio exposure (think Ramsey Lewis' "The In Crowd" and Cannonball Adderley's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"), the immensely successful title track of this great trumpeter's 1963 album hit the pop chart and just kept rising. It's even better in its original form, a 10-minute boogaloo romp featuring brilliant solos by Morgan, saxophonist Joe Henderson, and pianist Barry Harris. The rest of the album is a richly satisfying hard-bop love fest of masterfully swinging, blues-based blowing.

iTunes has a flaw

Lee Morgan is the man and this album is his best, but this mastering of the song, originally from HDTracks, has one issue in its iTunes form. The first four or five seconds on “Boy What A Night” are cut off which kind of ruins the whole package.
