Album Review

The Insane Clown Posse had a cult following around their hometown of Detroit in the mid-'90s, eventually winning a major-label contract with Jive. Their deal with Jive was short-lived, since Riddle Box didn't do so well. Still, they retained a devoted local following, which led to Hollywood Records signing the group in 1996. Hollywood spent a million dollars on the recording of ICP's label debut, The Great Milenko, which let the group work with name producers and guest artists like Slash. As a result, it was a better record than its predecessors, boasting a tougher sound and some actual hooks, without losing the juvenile vulgarity that pleased their following. So, everything should have worked out — ICP had a commercial album that would have brought them a big audience, if the marketplace could overlook the fact that the duo was dressed like evil clowns. But things didn't work out as planned. On the day of the release of The Great Milenko, Hollywood pulled the album from the market, claiming that they were unaware of the offensive content of the record. That seems a little unlikely, since a company wouldn't really sink a million dollars into a project being "unaware" of what it was about. Still, the resulting furor meant that the Insane Clown Posse became national figures, and The Great Milenko gained a sort of hip status. It's one of the better albums in ICP's work.

Musical talent at its finest right here. These two obviously know how to produce quality sound. I'm still pretty much stunned. Who WOULDN'T want to listen to two white guys pretending to be clowns rapping about how hardxfreakingxcore their life is. I can feel the angst from my chair.

I feel the need to write at least one intelligent review for this band. ICP is a misunderstood and discriminated band. Most reviewers have never even tried listening to their music to find if it has any plot or deeper meaning. ICP tells a story about heaven and hell, to sum it up. For all of you devote Christians out there, this is NOT for you. Don't get me wrong, I'm Christian as well, but you just have to accept certain things and try to enjoy them. If you don't like it, don't waste time reviewing it. Now for the album... This is probably one of ICP's greatest works. Their lyrics always leave me laughing at the obscinities they blurt out as if they were saying "hi". They definately require a certain taste to listen to them, but this album capitalizes on their best. With Great Milenko, Hokus Pokus, The Neden Game, and the Boogie Man tracks, this makes for great enjoyement, and a bunch of thought to put into the songs, so that you decypher the deeper meaning. I enjoy listening to it over and over again and would definately recommend this as the first album for new listeners to purchase. Be warned however, because this album may not be for you.

I can honestly say this is the worst band ever. There is no tallent here.

Formed: 1990 in Detroit, MI

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Insane Clown Posse are a cartoonish metal/rap band with a vaunted live show that features open fires, chain saws, liters of soda dousing the audience (Faygo being the group's favorite brand), and more emphasis on performance art than the performance of music. In the world of the late '90s, that was more than enough to get them a recording contract with a major label, though the release of their 1997 album, The Great Milenko, came with a bit of controversy. Now just a duo, ICP were originally formed...
