iTunes Review

With Hold On!, James Hunter proves that vintage-sounding soul can still be utterly vital and vibrant. The Brit sings—and writes—like Sam Cooke’s natural-born heir, but he brings his own tricks to the table too, whether delivering a sharp retort to spiritual dogma atop the funky feel of “Free Your Mind (While You Still Got Time),” slipping in a subtle ska undercurrent on the easy-rolling “This Is Where We Came In,” or unleashing his bluesy guitar skills on the instrumental “Satchelfoot.”

Funky Good

James Hunter stays true to what he knows and thats great beats, horns and vocals

Music for your heart and soul!!

The James hunter six sound is timeless. Since the moment I first Heard James sing a single note I was hooked! That joyous feeling I get when I listen to Billy Stewart, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Motown and countless blues greats, I get all over again when listening to James. I recently saw James preform in SC, and in an opera house that can seat 520, there was only maybe 60-100 people!?!? I was so disappointed for James and the six but they still put on a great show. I truly hope that with this new record (under Daptones) they get the recognition and exposure they so deserve. I think he's a great essential part to the Daptones family and I want more!!!! When is the documentary coming out? Where did this Brit get the soul? Thank you James and the six for the music!!! We love you!

Chart-blazing retro R&B, and smokey-soul grooves served-up with a side of 'hot sauce'

James Hunter's new CD "Hold On!" follows on with chart-blazing retro R&B, that he shakes out like a 'funky headliner' on the move. For those who haven't caught-up with 'The Hunter' and his crew; they lay-down some classic, smokey-soul grooves. Much in the vein of Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, and Ben E. King. If you didn't know for sure, you'd think you were listening to an AM 'disc jockey' spin a 45 record from Stax, Atlantic, or Chess records way back-in-the-day. Hunter's 'confessional vocals' are raw, hip, smooth, and just plain; stone-assed fun! Most of tunes are backed with signature sax, and the classic Hammond B-3 organ, reminiscent of the great Booker T. and the MG's. Sets the right atmosphere for a funky jazz club, blusey roadhouse, or smokey-bistro on a urban strip somewhere. Hard to believe James Hunter is a Brit, but he really understands the genre, and it didn't hurt, he was mentored by the great Van Morrison himself. One of my personal favorites is 'A Truer Heart', but in reality it's all good man. Nice to see Hunter and his 'Six' in the 'Daptone Stable'. With each succeeding effort Hunter, surpasses himself. I recommend this one for all those who are still "Hip at Heart". Recommended.

The James Hunter Six are a soul-blues band from Essex, England, who've been touring and recording together for more than a decade. Their immediate, gritty sound provides the backing for their songwriter/guitar slinger namesake, whose weathered yet buttery smooth voice has made the group a critical favorite and a touring sensation. Given their intensity and virtuosity, no less than Allen Toussaint, Sharon Jones, and Van Morrison have been counted as fans and shared stages with them. The rest of...
