Editors’ Notes

Gyptian burst unexpectedly on the contemporary reggae scene with “Serious Times,” an understated lament that blended an insistent, surprisingly traditional nyabinghi rhythm with a flowing pop melody. The song was one of 2005’s most popular, and its simple arrangement stood out on Jamaican radio at a time when even roots artists were embracing ever more elaborate production techniques. A handful of similar singles followed. In 2010, long-awaited crossover success arrived in the form of “Hold You,” a beguiling string of patois-laden romantic endearments buttressed by a smooth, R&B-inflected arrangement from producer Imran “Fire Peter” Passard. Where many of Gyptian’s previous efforts featured contributions from roots veterans like Bingi Bunny, Dean Fraser, and Earl “Chinna” Smith, Hold You largely abandons roots textures for a more modern production aesthetic. Gyptian’s vocals even get the Auto-Tune treatment on the languorous slow jam “Drive Me Crazy.” He handles them all with the effortless grace of a first-rate singer and shines throughout.

Makes Me Want To...

Hit the bong by the pool and chill out in the sun all day. Good summer chill album. Wish the version of Hold Yuh with Nicki Minaj was on here.

This Me Na Na Na Let Go!

Today was a good day! There was niceness in the air all day. Hold You was about to drop. I am sure Gyptian was feeling the vibes too. This album holds you and never let go for real. It sorta sets up the ladies man vibe right away. The arrangement is similar to Serani's No Games in that they lined up all the love songs together but end things on a more message driven note. One song that will always be dear to me is 'Beautiful Lady.' My relationship was built on Bob Marley's 'Is This Love' & 'Beautiful Lady.' It is nice to see it receive the honor it always deserve. I give it up to VP for putting it close to the opener to avoid from giving it that filler vibe most albums fall into when they are rushed. 'Love Against The Wall' is from the I Can Feel Your Pain album. This tune needs all the exposure it can get. TBH is pure Gyptian! The greatest feeling arrives when the dancehall vibes is unleashed on 'Call Gyptian' & 'All In You.' These two songs took me back to late 80s, early 90s dancehall. Wayne Wonder comes to mind here. This is vintage dancehall given a modern feel & R&B twist throughout. Gyptian has all the elements for crossover appeal and he knows it with this showcase. I see what he is moving towards. He deserves even more. Although it feels like a sharp shift from Serious Times & Mama, I understand the need to fulfill a long sought after dream. I am impress with the producers choice in beats. Compliments to his smooth voice always. What I see here is an artist who has arrive at a style he is comfortable with. I have always imagine Jah Cure skanking in similar fashion. Nice entry for Gyptian. Highly recommended.

Windell Beneto Edwards became the singer known as Gyptian when he left his rural home in St. Andrew, Jamaica, and traveled to Portmore, the town where the promoter known as Mr. Wong ran his studio. Gyptian had grown up singing in his mother's Adventist church and listening to his Rastafarian father's music. His father had been a promoter himself for a time, so he understood the grooming and networking that would be involved in turning Gyptian's passion into his profession. His parents trusted Ravin...
