Is this the best musical ever?

Well…yes and no. It’s only part of the best musical ever. Falsettoland is part the last part of a three part opera labeled “The Marvin Musicals”. This album is an operetta that tells the story of Marvin, who is a middle aged homosexual who resides in New York. This third chapter deals with Marvin and his relationship with his family, (Ex-wife, son, lover) and other affiliates (lesbian next door neighbors, physiatrist). William Finn’s score and lyrics are second only to Sondheim, and his characters and stories and second only to God. If you are not familiar with this music and story do yourself a favor and download this great musical. Download now, thank me later.

I saw this show performed by the University of Northern Colorado and fell in love. Its sparratic, restless music successfully reflects human thought itself, and its constant wit and sarcasm strengthen the play's character ten-fold. Clearly influenced by Sondheim, but still with its own direction, Falsettoland and its predecessor are wonderful contributions to the theater. A must-buy for anyone involved in the performing arts.

William Finn, composer of a number of great shows, including "March of the Falsettos", "Elegies" and, more famously "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", is an amazing new artist amongst musical theater. Picking innovative, new ideas for shows, Finn's music is charming and beautiful. I feel I get a great deal buying his music for so little.

Diverted by a medical emergency in the 1990s, he recovered to write a show about his ordeal, A New Brain. Finn grew up in Natick, MA, and attended Williams College, where, upon graduation, he was awarded...
