iTunes Review

Every year, the symphonic pop group The Polyphonic Spree puts on a holiday extravaganza in Dallas. 2012 marks the 10th time it's done that, so the band has released this grand summary of what the holiday season means to its members. The music goes well beyond the usual holiday cheer. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is a psychedelic reworking with swirling keyboards, an untamed flute, and a Middle Eastern mode that adds a depth beyond predictable platitudes. John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas—War Is Over" never loses its importance in a violent world. "White Christmas" lurches with a mystical hangover. "Let It Snow," with harp and piano, evokes the season's cheery wonder. School of Seven Bells joins in for an epic version of "Silver Bells" that takes the tune into the 21st century. Later, a four-minute reprise of the song is slightly more sedate. This isn't a traditional holiday album by any measure, but it's plenty fun and true to The Polyphonic Spree's free and sprawling spirit.

Not Quite What I was Hoping, But Still Good

I am as big of a Tripping Daisy/Spree fan as there is and I had high hopes for this album. I have been to at least 5 Spree Christmas shows and was hoping that they would mirror of lot of the live stuff on their album but they went in a different direction for a lot of their songs. It's Christmas… I want peppy upbeat Spree, not experimental Christmas. With that being said there are still some gems on here and well worth the price. I hope that volume 2 is more upbeat and more like what they perform live. Also I think it is time for a Christmas Miracle.

Tripping Daisy Reunion 2013!!!!!! It's past time.

Classic holiday album

This is the perfect album to play for the family as well for those who like an adventure in listening. They have taken the standards and updated them for 2012 as only The Polyphonic Spree could. I plan to make this a tradtion in my family. Genius.

Amazing Christmas album

Fantastic album from an amazing band. Each song grows on you with each listen unveiling layer after layer of musical genious.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Dallas, TX

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

When the Polyphonic Spree first appeared in 2000, the Dallas symphonic pop group was as much a band as a "happening," in the 1960s sense of the word. The Spree's two dozen members took the stage in flowing robes of snowy white, an appropriate backdrop for their happy and uplifting blend of pop, orchestral rock, and minimal touches of gospel. The costumes changed over the years, but the Polyphonic Spree's message remained...
