iTunes Review

A paragon of stoner-rock perfection, Sleep’s Holy Mountain epitomizes the gloriously lumbering swing first accessed in Black Sabbath’s “Hole in the Sky” and makes it slower, funkier, and meaner. A power trio consisting of bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, guitarist Matt Pike, and drummer Chris Hakius, Sleep blends its instrumental voices in such a way that the band forms its own tectonic rumble, which manifests and then hovers parallel to whatever groove it's playing. The riffs on Holy Mountain are so deep and rich that to listen to the album on headphones is to dissemble a normative sense of space and time. The album’s imagery is primarily drawn from ancient religious ceremonies, monsters of legend, and marijuana rituals. Sleep refuses to simply serve as entertainment for listeners, insisting on completely engulfing spectators in sound. While Sleep’s approach might at first seem disorienting and brutal, total submission to this album’s sound design will result in elation and otherworldly transportation. Mission accomplished.

A sludgefeast for the ears.

Sounds like Tony Iommi being dragged by his hair through molasses.

Genre Standard

This album has some of the heaviest nastiest riffs I have ever heard...Its one of a couple of albums that set the standard for the Stoner genre (Monster Magnet's Spine of God is another)....The guitar tone is nothing short of amazing...Havent heard a guitar tone that heavy and abrasive since Celtic Frost...There is hommage paid to Sabbath, but this is way more than a Sabbath-clone/rip off...Sleep takes it, adds thousands of pounds of layers to it, and drops it on the listener...who is smiling while being crushed by the sheer sonic force of the album...Its like a giant boulder being rolled over you at a snails pace... From Beyond is album only, but that song alone is worth the full price, and is the first glimpse of what Dopesmoker would be...Tripped out lyrics, great riffs, subtle yet complex drumming, and some great bass playing lay the foundation for this gigantic album... Highlights for me...From Beyond, Dragonaut, Aquarian, Some Grass, Holy Mountain, and The Druid...all best listened to at volumes as loud as you can stand it... Its a shame that sleep only lasted one more album...The bright side is that we got High on Fire...which happens to be the best thing to happen to "metal" since Kurt Cobain almost killed it in 1991...

Gods what an album

This is simply classic, wonderful, stuff. There is simply no reason not to buy this sonic gem.

Formed: 1990 in San Jose, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

Perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band, Northern California trio Sleep had a career that wafted in and out of focus from within their self-mandated cloud of marijuana smoke. In their short time together, they issued some of the heaviest, most uncompromising doom metal albums ever recorded, leaving a legend far exceeding the actual volume of their output. Formed around the turn of the '90s in San Jose, CA, by bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, guitarists Matt Pike and Justin Marler, and drummer Chris Haikus,...
