Editors’ Notes

Five years after the excellent You’re Only Lonely, Southern California’s mellowest son returned with another shot at the commercial mainstream (or the country market) with Home by Dawn. Despite the copyright date of 1984, the album rarely succumbs to that era's garish productions. The drums here (played by Souther!) are more forceful, while the beautiful melodies that made him an honorary member of The Eagles are all in place, as are guest vocal spots from Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Linda Ronstadt, and Russ Martin, plus guitar work from Waddy Wachtel and Billy Joe Walker. The Danny Kortchmar/Souther track “Say You Will” throws Henley, Ronstadt, and Souther into an impressive showdown, with an upbeat tune that deserved more attention than it received. But then that’s often been Souther’s fortune. His albums are always well-crafted, with songs that other writers would sell their souls for. Country-rock fans know what they have, and songs like the title track, “I’ll Take Care of You,” “Don’t Know What I’m Gonna Do," and “Bad News Travels Fast” deserve a much wider audience.

The Best of California Folk-Rock

This guy is the best kept secret you think you never heard of! J.D. Souther not only has a great voice, he writes a helluva poignant song. Don't trust me, he wrote for & performed with the Eagles (some of their very best stuff), Linda Ronstadt (Same here), Don Henley, James Taylor to name a few. Songs like Prisoner In Disguise, End of the Innocence, Best of My Love, Her Town Too, etc. Although he charted only one hit to speak of on his own, he penned some of the best stuff done in the '70's & '80's. I think this is his best solo effort, solid throughout. If you like the Eagles, Henley's solo work and Ronstadt's duets, this is a good bet.

home by dawn

home by dawn was a release i believe in the late 70's or early 80's. this is one of the smoothest sounding albums i have heard ever. i lost my copy and have looked in a million record stores looking for it. i am glad that he is re-releasing it. carl

I could never believe JD didn't beome one of the major acts at the time. I'm sure his publishing took care of him. He has the whole package, writing, vocals, great buddies and hot chicks. What more do you need, course maybe that was the problem. Love ya JD JP

While J.D. Souther may have made his biggest impact on the country-rock sound behind the scenes or in a supporting role to some of the bigger pop names of the '70s, he had an impressive and critically acclaimed series of solo albums that have unfortunately all but disappeared from music fans' radar. Born in Detroit, Souther was raised in Amarillo, Texas, which may help explain his stylistic roots in both country and rock music. He was in a band called John David & the Senders (also known as the...
