Album Review

Most people expected Simply Red to have popped up on VH1's Where Are They Now? at any moment, but Home is their eighth proper album. Finding a niche as Jamiroquai for the smooth jazz set, they've released album after album while living off the worldwide success of Stars. Home looks like a return to form with Mick Hucknall taking over a good amount of the production and releasing the album on his own label,, although an outside producer might have given them an extra kick in their velour pants. However, despite the album's weak moments, there's the genuine sweetness of "Home," the lavish funkiness of "Fake," and the profound and moving "Home Loan Blues." When the band masterfully slinks its way through Dennis Brown's "Money in My Pocket," all sorts of Picture Book flashbacks appear. Home gives half an album's worth of reasons to cheer for Simply Red.

I thought I would like it better than I did

Maybe its the years, but I thought this would be a good album to bring back some great memories. But I didn't get the same warm feeling listening this time around. I wish I had listened song by song and only selected about three tracks. If you have a memory like mine, I recommend you take a listen track-by-track rather than buying the whole album at one shot.

A New Flame

The Music Store does not have 'A New Flame', it should be available because it is master stroke of SR at their best. It is rich with a variety of strong and infectious songs. Hands down it is their best, so let's get it on line ! Thanks

Inspired Grooves

Simply Red deserves their share of criticism through the years, but the negative reviews here are misspent. Here, Mick flexes his vocal muscles and shows us he can remake any song, interpreting the original with insight and fun, as evidenced in "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and "Positively 4th Street." Naturally, cool blue-eyed soul pervades a number of tracks: "Home," "Sunrise," "Hoam Loan Blues," and "Fake." I enjoy repeated listenings of this addition to the extensive Simply Red catalogue.

Led by the vocalist Mick Hucknall, the English blue-eyed soul band Simply Red became international stars with their debut album, Picture Book.
