Editors’ Notes

The band on The Honeydrippers, Vol. 1 is among the best all-star lineups ever assembled for a one-off album. It features vocalist Robert Plant, plus guitarists Jeff Beck, Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers, and Plant’s Led Zeppelin partner Jimmy Page. Page only contributes two solos, but each highlights a key aspect of his playing. “I Get a Thrill” shows Page at his loosest and raunchiest, while a reading of “Sea of Love” (the album’s biggest hit) showcases the gilded lyricism so beloved by Zeppelin diehards. Plant is in fine voice, transforming the urban masculinity of Roy Brown and Ray Charles into a more lissome brand of sex appeal. The superstars share effortlessly in their love for these canonical R&B tunes, which were recorded at the behest of Atlantic president Ahmet Ertegun, the businessman who bridged the rock 'n' roll of the '50s to the classic rock of the '70s. The album isn't overwrought or overplanned. In the spirit of the original recordings, which Ertegun oversaw in the Truman era, the songs here are delivered with spontaneity, cheerfulness, and sincerity.

Customer Reviews

Robert Plant showed his talent again

I got the chance to see Plant in his solo heyday several times. The tour that also included the Honeydrippers set was the best! The band left the stage as if to take a break and returned to a completely retro stage set-up and Plant and company just tore down the house. Alot of Zep fans didn't like the Honeydrippers gig, but it showed how TRUELY talented Plant is. By the way, the new album (w/ Allison Kraus) got the same type response - but if you really like Plant, catch the CMT live show from Nashville!

Great song and great album

The wife and I liked this song so much and it became our wedding song more than 20 years ago. Plant really showed is talent when being involed with this album.

The Honeydrippers

Real honest to goodness rock 'n roll. The Honeydrippers version of Rockin' At Midnight is the cat's a-meow! The greatest swing dance song of all time! Get your gal, get on a good ol' wood dance floor, and hop and bop and swing the night away! Good clean fun.

The Honeydrippers were a post-Led Zeppelin side project for singer Robert Plant, allowing him to indulge his sincere love for vintage R&B. Though best known for the all-star aggregate that waxed the group's only recording in 1984, Plant actually formed the Honeydrippers in 1981 as a way to return to his pre-Zeppelin roots in American blues and R&B; the group took its name from blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes' nickname. The original lineup featured guitarists Robbie Blunt and Andy Sylvester, saxophonist...
