iTunes Review

Thanks to his lengthy stint as Petra's vocalist, John Schlitt’s legacy in Christian rock is secure. His latest solo album, The Greater Cause, extends his reputation further with arena-sized anthems and thoughtful slower numbers that celebrate his unshakable faith. After 40-plus years in music, Schlitt’s vocals retain a raspy, galvanizing edge. Moments on The Greater Cause hark back to his glory days with Petra, as well as his ‘70s-era tenure with the hard/progressive rock combo Head East. He brings a swaggering, aggressive energy to “Live It Loud,” locks into a clap-along groove for “Love Won’t Leave Me Alone,” and soars with the ascending melodic lines of “Hope That Saves the World.” Salvation's at the center of these songs, with “Faith & Freedom” adding a note of patriotism and “One of These Days” facing down modern decadence. Though upbeat tunes predominate, Schlitt proves himself equally adept at acoustic balladry on “The Gift,” a loving tribute to his wife. From first cut to last, The Greater Cause testifies to the musical vigor and spiritual fervor of this veteran rocker.

Awesome!!! Way to go John Schlitt! Love the incredible "Love Won't Leave Me Alone"! Bringing back bold & radical Christian sounds that have powerful lyrics of the faith and of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I love it

I didn't know John had a bad album they are all good in my opinion but this is by far the best. Once again great work John. I can't seem to get enough of Hope That Saves The World. Reminds me of the Petra days. This needs to be on every secular rock station there is. :D

'The Greater Cause' is sharp, timely, and teaming with energy.

One might consider a fan-sourced solo album from a sixty-two year old contemporary Christian singer a desperate attempt at making one more paycheck on the backs of die-hard fans and well-meaning family members. And one might also think such an album would be a tired re-tread of one Christian cliché after another. But if the name on that solo effort is John Schlitt, one would most certainly be wrong.

'The Greater Cause' is sharp, timely, and teaming with energy. It is so alive it's as if it is going to leap out of the nearest speaker. Musically diverse and lyrically uncompromising, there are no washed-up, half-hearted, recycled phrases here. In one listen, these melodies will entrench into your heart and you'll be singing along. Boldly!

'TGC' easily tops anything Schlitt has done with Petra, Head East or on his own in terms of writing and production, yet it fits well with the Petra hit albums 'Beyond Belief,' 'Unseen Power,' and 'Wake Up Call' of the band's Grammy-winning 90's heydays as well as with John's solo efforts, especially 'Shake.'

'The Greater Cause' is an album that fully realizes what it is - a fan-funded, solo rock album from an exceptional industry veteran - and then shatters all expectations: it is modern, loud, diverse and encouraging. It delivers on a promise that not even the biggest of John Schlitt fans would ever dare to request.
