The Japanese rock trio Boris is known for its heavy, Melvins/Earth-inspired alt-metal and its genre-hopping abilities, plus its collaborations with experimental artists such as Merzbow, Keiji Haino, and Sunn O))). In 2011, the shapeshifting unit put out three stylistically diverse albums: Attention Please, Heavy Rocks, and New Album. The latter release, which includes reworkings of material from the other two albums as well as new originals, displays a mélange of influences from the '90s. “Flare” announces itself with the sound of a siren before becoming a sort of unholy marriage of punk and Yes-like prog with electronic squiggles thrown in. “Hope” is a slice of delightful indie pop à la Flaming Lips that comes decked out with Mellotron backing. “Party Boy” shifts into dance music, but the band’s melodic sensibilities tie it to the other songs. “Spoon” occupies the sort of blissed-out space My Bloody Valentine called home, while “Pardon?” is a slow, spare respite from the surrounding high-energy workouts. The catchy and dramatic “Looprider” closes the album on a high note.

A mix of the past two

Another great release from Boris, a band that seems to have no boundaries. This is sonically a mix of Heavy Rocks (2011) and Attention Please featuring different versions of some of the songs from those albums. Saw them live a couple months ago and they were fantastic. Highly recommended. If you enjoyed the past couple albums I would recommend this, although I don't think it is quite as good as either one.

Hey LJ_killer - stick to reviewing music you know something about. The world doesn't need a non-review on a band you obviously are not familiar with. And by the way - this is definitely one of their more accessible releases. God forbid if you were to dig into their catalog a little deeper...

don't hate....

Boris doesn't care if you don't this album is "metal" enough for you. That's why they are one of the greatest bands. They play whatever they want and don't care. They write music for themselves and not for other people. The 2 other albums they released this year (attention please and heavy rocks 2011) are also awesome. They can write doom metal/sludge, experimental drone, thrash metal, punk, electronica, and for this album they decided to write j-pop for the hell of it just because they can!


Boris have been one of my favorite bands since I first heard "Amplifier Worship". On this album however they leave out the droning and heavy sludge that they are well known for and replace it with lovely post-noise pop. It's definately something that will take some time to get used to especially if you're only into the heavy side of Boris.
I was highly impressed by this album!
