iTunes Editors’ Notes

You can feel the sweat flying off Neil Diamond as he storms his way through the music captured on Hot August Night. Recorded live at Hollywood's Greek Theater in August 1972 before a frenzied crowd, Diamond feeds off his audience's energy and delivers a performance that's half rock 'n' roll, half evangelistic revival. His commanding baritone never sounded better then when he tears into classics like "Cherry, Cherry," "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Red, Red Wine," delivering each inescapable hook with the touch of a master. Few singer-songwriters could pull off the melodrama of "Shilo" and "I Am, I Said" with the enraptured conviction that Diamond displays here. The emotional heart of the concert is "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show," a gospel-rock tour-de-force that sounds ready to raise the dead. Hot August Night is spectacular proof of Diamond's magic as a live artist and remains a swelteringly intense listening experience. This Deluxe Edition contains a variety of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Epic live album

On August 24, 1972, when Neil Diamond began the series of concerts that would become this album, he promised the audience, "This is gonna be special… we promised to do things for you that you would not forget for awhile."

Well, having danced my way through the final night of the 40th anniversary tour in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, I think I can say WOW!!! Nobody is gonna forget the best live album ever recorded and Neil, you still put on one helluva live show!!! The band sounded wonderful (goosebumps on the opening bars of Crunchy Granola Suite) and Neil is still The Man!!!

Just completely spectacular.

First album I ever heard

My mom played this for me when I was about 5 on an old RCA "end table player". I didn't know much about music at that point, but I thought...."this is great stuff". I'm 49 now and although my musical memories span 5 decades and I would describe muself as a progressive rocker.....this album is exactly what others have called it: one of the best live albums every recorded. Now go find Cheap Trick at Budohahn and call it a year!

In a career that began in the 1960s, Neil Diamond became a major recording artist, an internationally successful touring act, and a songwriter whose compositions produced hits for himself and others. His earliest recognition, in fact, came as a songwriter associated with the Brill Building era of Tin Pan Alley in the early '60s. But he soon branched out into recording and performing, and by the early '70s was topping the charts with the self-written singles "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue."...
