Album Review

The idea on Tonin' was to turn the Manhattan Transfer loose on a baker's dozen of good old 1960s pop and R&B hits in league either with the original artists or prominent guests from that period and beyond. And yes, it's a stellar list, guaranteed to stir warm and fuzzy memories, and the tunes echo the old lament of an earlier age, "They don't write songs like they used to." ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

If you like harmony and great covers, this is a must! Mostly love the whole disc, surely a Mannhattan Transfer fans must have.

Not one of MT's better collections

Let me just say from the start that I'm a big fan of The Manhattan Transfer and have been since they first started doing live shows and recording. I love just about everything they do. But . . .

The only way a collection of covers like this works is if (1) the covers are as good as the originals or (2) the covers are so different that, even if not as good as the originals, they are interesting. The problem here is that the arrangements pretty much always follow the originals, and I was left wishing I was listening to the originals as I listened to MT's covers of those originals.

That said, a few work, notably "La-La Means I Love You" (with Laura Nyro). That song definitely stands out and holds it own on on any album. "Along Comes Mary" is interesting, too.

But beyond that, this isn't really one of MT's better collections.

If you're a newby to the Manhattan Transfer, however, check out their other collections. You might especially like Extensions, Mecca for Moderns, their Greatest Hits, and the Anthology.

Formed: 1969 in New York, NY

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Riding a wave of nostalgia in the '70s, the Manhattan Transfer resurrected jazz trends from boogie-woogie to bop to vocalese in a slick, slightly commercial setting that balanced the group's close harmonies. Originally formed in 1969, the quartet recorded several albums of jazz standards as well as much material closer to R&B/pop. Still, they were easily the most popular jazz vocal group of their era, and the most talented of any since the heyday of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross during the early '60s....
