Album Review

Ladies and Gentlemen: this is the most invigorating of all Jack Hylton compilations. It contains an unusually large number of hot early jazz sides recorded by Hylton for the HMV label between 1926 and 1930. Examples include "Turn on the Heat," "Tiger Rag," "Diga Diga Doo," "Harmonica Harry." The most peculiar portion of this package exists in the two takes of "I Want to Be Bad," a saucy little item closely associated with Annette Hanshaw and Helen Kane, here given a supreme gender bender treatment by Sam Browne and two other naughty males who cheerfully threaten to rouge their lips, shake their shoulders and twist their hips.
