iTunes Editors’ Notes

In between the lines on 2003’s Hotel Paper, you can hear Michelle Branch going through the growing pains of young adulthood. Add the pressures of rising pop stardom to the mix and you pretty much have the essence of this solid sophomore release. With the help of producer John Leventhal, Branch ventures into bluegrass territory (“Love Me Like That,” a duet with Sheryl Crow), dips her toes into swampy sounds (“Empty Handed”) and flirts with sultry R&B (“Desperately”). Branch passes through a battery of broken and thwarted relationships, with the stinging “Are You Happy Now” and the aggrieved “Breathe” carrying the most emotional charge. More bittersweet are thoughtfully yearning tracks like “It’s You” and “One of These Days.” At various points, Branch sounds like a better-mannered Avril Lavigne or a less-genteel Jewel. For all its studio polish, Hotel Paper sounds like a transitional work by an artist still in the throes of self-discovery — in fact, that’s part of its charm.

Customer Reviews

Beautiful...

Michelle is extremely talented. Not only does she have a great singing voice, but she writes her own songs and plays the guitar very well. All these song's lyrics have meaning, and I can relate to every one of them. My favorite songs are Breathe and Tuesday Morning. I promise you, buy this album or a handful of songs, and you won't be dissapointed.

The Talented Michelle Branch

I waited so long for Hotel Paper to come out and when it did, and i listened to the album, i realized that it was really worth the wait! I thought it would be hard for her to top her first album "The Spirit Room" but she really did with this album. She wirtes such amazing songs that anyone can relate to. Michelle Branch is one of my all time favorite artists and I can't wait for the next Album. She totally rox my sox off! She worked really hard on this album and it turned out fantastic. It deserves much Kudos

Haven't Gotten Over It

I was 13 years old, and I had only heard "Goodbye to You" and "Everywhere" on the radio/MTV. She was opening for the Dixie Chicks' Top of the World Tour Summer 2003. October 2003...I instinctively bought this CD at Sam Goody. I loved it, and I still continue to listen to it, if not as much as before. My favorites are "Are You Happy Now?" "Find Your Way Back" "Empty Handed" Tuesday Morning" "Breathe" "Hotel Paper" and "Til I Get Over You" I'm not saying you should get this, but it'd be worth it if you did get it. ^_^

Although she rose to fame during the teen pop era, Michelle Branch — who was 17 years old when her debut album, The Spirit Room, began its double-platinum run in 2001 — modeled her own songs after iconic alt-rock females like Lisa Loeb and Melissa Etheridge. Raised in Arizona, Branch sang throughout her childhood but didn’t pick up the guitar until her 14th birthday, when she received the instrument as a gift. Within a week, she’d written her first song. Branch’s parents eventually decided...
