Album Review

For an Orange County band that released its records on the legendary U.K. punk label No Future (Posh Boy in the U.S.), it's a shame that it isn't as fondly remembered as O.C. peers like Social Distortion, the Adolescents, and Agent Orange. In Mike Magrann, Channel 3 had an extremely talented songwriter, capable of making punk sound and feel as emotional as it was supposed to be. With his partner in crime Kim Gardner on second guitar and backing vocals, Channel 3 churned out some of the most exciting punk records imaginable, taking power and fury and adding melody and subtle flair. Imagine Agent Orange with a few extra chords borrowed from the Monkees. This compilation gathers practically everything the band released on Posh Boy Records (and No Future) from 1981 to 1983 and is a very powerful collection. "Out of Control," "Manzanar," "Fear of Life," and "You Make Me Feel Cheap" were instant classics out of the box and never fail to please. And the other 22 songs aren't too shabby, either. Calling it "The Skinhead Years" may turn a few people off, but the liner notes clearly separate the band's involvement in the punk/skinhead musical movement from the heavily racist, white supremacy skinhead movement. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee, Rovi

powerful and essential socal hardcore

I was lucky enough to see these guys a couple of times back in the day. They were a superb live band, quintessentially socal hardcore but still unique and distinct from their peers. The records collected on this compilation cover all the good releases (never mind their later, ill-advised imitation Aerosmith/hair-band attempts at rock stardom). When I lived in Europe for a time I was able to turn many of my friends there onto CH3's sound. While maybe never quite as popular or influential as Black Flag or the Dead Kennedy's, Channel 3 held their own against the best punk bands playing the circuit at the time. "You Make Me Feel Cheap" and "Catholic Boy" are two greats from their first full length LP, while "Manzanar" is a potent political tune from the same album. From "After The Lights Went Out" Mike Magrann demonstrated his growing literate nature with highly intelligent yet still angry lyrics. His focus was more mature as he and the band grew musically as well. "What About Me?" and "Truth and Trust" are standouts along with "I Didn't Know". Their cover of the Stones' "Stupid Girl" may not rock your world but it is solid and respectful while making it their own. Anyone interested in early 80's hardcore definitely needs this collection. Don't miss out!

This USA-based hardcore band comprised Mike Magrann (vocals, guitar), Kimm Gardner (guitar), Larry Kelly (bass) and Mike Burton (the most permanent of their first four drummers). Residents of the suburban community of Cerritos in south Los Angeles, they originally formed in 1980. Their first release was an EP on Californian label Posh Boy in 1981. One track from this, ‘Manzanar’, was played heavily by UK disc jockey John Peel, which resulted in Posh Boy’s Robbie Fields licensing a three-track EP...
