Since its earliest days, American country music has drawn upon its Christian roots for inspiration. This deep connection is celebrated on How Great Thou Art: Gospel Favorites from the Grand Ole Opry, a gathering of Nashville greats interpreting traditional American hymns. Drawn from a series of 2007 Opry shows, these tracks range from the tenderly nostalgic (Ricky Skaggs and the Whites’ “Family Bible”) to the blazingly fervent (Charlie Daniels and Mac Powell’s “I’ll Fly Away”). The obvious commercial drawing card here is Carrie Underwood’s soaring rendition of the title hymn. But more often than not, the album’s most affecting performances lean towards the stark rather than the show-stopping. Cases in point include Patty Loveless’ Appalachian-accented reading of “Precious Memories,” Trace Adkins’ moody rendition of “Wayfaring Stranger” and Brad Paisley’s guitar-and-vocal take on “The Old Rugged Cross.” Dierks Bentley’s hard country treatment of “A House of Gold” reveals the Rock of Ages beneath every honky-tonk floor. Among the most revelatory moments is Loretta Lynn’s “Where No One Stands Alone” — her vulnerable but firmly-grounded performance goes to the heart of this album’s triumphant message. In both historic and artistic terms, How Great Thou Art is a landmark release.
Carrie Underwood never fails to deliver!
"How Great Thou Art" is a song that will live on throughout generations. It is a song that we would sing at funerals in Hawaii so it holds a special place in my heart! Carrie does a phenomenal job.
