Customer Reviews

How has nobody reviewed this yet?? This collection is my favorite thing ever.

For anybody that doesn't know what a song-poem is, a quick history: In the 1960s and 70s, people still read newspapers and magazines. Instead of browser ads, there were advertisements in the backs of said magazines. Some schmuck could send in his lyrics to be turned into a song and "sent out into the industry." In exchange for probably around $70-150, you would get a record of your song, recorded by (sometimes drug-addled) session musicians, but no such industry person would ever hear it. It was in fact, a total scam, but the products of this weird time in recording history have attained somewhat of a cult following in the ensuing years. These 28 songs are completely insane. I haven't played this collection for a single person who didn't love it, and I've played this for a LOT of people. Some favorites are the rambling storytelling of the title track Do You Know The Difference Between Big Wood and Brush, the drug psychosis of Human Breakdown... and Ecstacy to Frenzy, the amazing, ridiculous Richard Nixon, All You Need Is a Fertile Mind, which I'm pretty sure is about porn, Gretchen's New Dish is the funniest thing I've ever heard, How Long Are You Staying (or, Disco Disco Disco) is hilarious, and The Moon Men is also rambling and informative. Favorite lyric: "they picked up rocks and sand, to put in the bags. when they get back to earth, they will all have tags." Blind Man's PEN15 is the only one to my knowledge that was written by someone who wasn't clinically insane. The guy that wrote the lyrics did so intentionally trying to see if he could write ANYTHING offensive and ridiculous enough to get rejected, but lo, they would record anything as long as you could pay the fee. Originally it was titled "Stevie Wonder's PEN15" (I dunno if iTunes censors 'bad' words), but they had to change it to avoid libel or whatever. Alright, this review is making me look as crazy and obsessive as the people who originally submitted these lyrics! Take my word for it though, PLEASE BUY THIS ALBUM. It's earnestly funny, and so obscure that people will think you're the hippest, coolest person on the block!

If you don't like this album...

Congratulations, you are dead inside.
