iTunes Review

Thomas A. Dorsey wrote enough sanctified classics that he’s long been considered The Father of Gospel Music. This 1973 collection provides a neat place to hear both his songs and testimony: Throughout the album, Dorsey recollects some key moments from his own journey, while beloved compositions like “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” “(There’ll Be) Peace in the Valley,” and “What Could I Do If It Wasn’t for the Lord” are given vibrant readings by The Dixie Hummingbirds, Marion Williams, and other gospel greats.

a classic, inadequately described

this is a very great classic of gospel music, and of american popular song. it is from 1973 (not the 30s, as indicated in the pitiful one-sentence description). after a run as a raunchy blues artist in the 20s performing as 'georgia tom' (for example on tampa red's 'tight like that'), dorsey founded the modern style of african-american gospel music. this album is an all-star tribute, and though dorsey is involved, each cut features a great gospel artist of the period when the record was released. so i'm going to add the artist info by cut #:

The acknowledged father of gospel music, Thomas A. Dorsey remains arguably the most influential figure ever to impact the genre. A versatile composer whose material shifted easily from energetic hard gospel to gossamer hymns, he penned many of the best-known songs in the gospel canon, among them "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley"; the founder of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, he was also a pioneering force in the renowned Chicago gospel community, where...
